South African Coach Peter de Villiers has quit after the side’s 11-9 loss to Australia yesterday.

It ends a tenure that began in 2008 when he replaced World Cup winning coach Jake White and it has been riddled with comment and controversy ever since.

De Villiers became the first black Springboks coach as the country tried to overcome the racial inequalities of the apartheid era.

He had a terrible reign with five Tri Nations losses, including home defeats by New Zealand and Australia in 2010.

Meanwhile, in the semi finals of the Rugby World Cup - next Saturday, Wales will play France while on Sunday Australia faces New Zealand.
