A 17 year old youth, deemed uncontrollable and a danger to society, has been sentenced to serve 18 months imprisonment at the Naboro Prison.

In her ruling, High Court Judge Justice Nazhat Shameem stressed that the justice system has failed to find any alternative sentence which would be suitable to him.

Judge Shameem highlighted that despite his young age, the minor has committed 14 offences ranging from drunk and disorderly conduct, larceny, escaping from police, assault on police and robbery with violence and to make matters worse, he has escaped from church and institutions where and when he was placed on probation with lenient sentences.

She also revealed that the Welfare Supervisor has informed the court that he cannot be looked after by any of the youth institutes they have placed him in and his parents also think that he cannot be controlled.

While sentencing him to serve his 18 months at the Naboro prison, Judge Shameem has also requested the Prisons Department to keep him away from the hardened criminals and to give him counseling.
