Flying Fijians new find openside flanker Sam Matavesi is still trying to come to terms with his selection into the National side for the Pacific Nations Cup.

Matavesi have just started just five games all season in the second tier of English rugby but now he has taken a major step in his rugby career for his first national call up.

Speaking to Fijivillage the 21-year-old said it would be an honour for him to wear the Flying Fijians jersey.

Matavesi is the younger brother of Worcester’s Josh Matavesi, who has already won six caps for Fiji, although neither has ever played on South Pacific soil.

Now, having never played a top-flight game, Matavesi returns to Fiji for the first time since a family holiday in 2001 as he prepares for his first game against Japan.

Meanwhile, Fiji will take on Japan next Saturday at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
