The President, Ratu Epeli Nalatikau said that the fact that 65 percent of the inmates are between the age of 17 to 30 years requires a lot of soul searching from all stakeholders.
Speaking to Prison officials, government officials and inmates, in his first official visit to the Naboro Prison and Correctional Services, Ratu Epeli said the biggest challenge is trying to reduce these numbers.
Ratu Epeli said everyone must work together to look at ways in which they can assist the inmates in prisons around the country.
He adds while this will require an increase in the Prison services budget, with the work already being undertaken by the Yellow Ribbon project, he can only hope this will contribute to the economic growth of the country.
The President was accorded a full traditional Fijian ceremony and was also entertained by the different groups from the Nasinu, Suva and Naboro Prisons.
He also visited the Naboro medium and maximum facility where he met with the inmates.
