The Boundaries Commission has begun its work on the proposal to redesign the Electoral boundaries.

Chairman Suresh Chandra said they had a series of meetings last week and will have another meeting on Monday to discuss about the data available to them from the Bureau of Statistics.

He said an IT expert will design the proposal for them based on the Census provisional figures and when final figures are available then necessary changes will be made.

Chandra adds the commission needs to do a Boundary Definition and names of the boundaries under the 1997 Constitution and Electoral Act. He said it’s unclear by when their work will be completed however the whole process may take over seven months.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission will be awaiting relevant reports from the Boundaries Commission and Bureau of Statistics before announcing the dates for the next general elections.
