The Ministry of Women is not surprised with the findings of a UNDP report which highlights women becoming more financial literate than men.

Permanent Secretary for Women Govind Sami said the Report on Financial Capability, Financial Competence and Wellbeing in Rural Fijian Households, showed what the Ministry has always been aware of that women remain silent contributors to the economy and more so in financial outlays of families.

Sami said statistics from the National Centre for Small and Micro Enterprise Development show that more than 75% of their clients are women and most of them are involved in savings programmes.

He added they currently working with the NCSMED and hope that women will be able to take advantage of the facility and become more visible.

Sami added that the Ministry's focus for 2010 is on Vanila farming, Bee Keeping, Poultry Farming and Virgin Coconut Oil, and they are promoting this income generating projects under the Cottage Industry Development Programme.
