A 24 year old woman today pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter for allegedly strangling her new born baby to death.
Milika Videi was initially charged with murder, however her lawyer today informed Judge Justice Salesi Temo that under the Criminal Procedure Decree, her client is willing to take a guilty plea on a reduced charge of either manslaughter or infanticide.
The DPP lawyer, after consulting with her superiors filed the amended charge of manslaughter and Videi pleaded guilty.
It is alleged that on March 13th 2009 in Burerua Tailevu, Videi gave birth and allegedly strangled her new born baby.
The matter is adjourned till tomorrow for mitigation and submissions on sentencing.
