A 24 year old woman who drowned her two daughters in the Rewa River last year was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Suva High Court this morning.

While sentencing Ronika Devi, Justice Isikeli Mataitoga ruled that she should serve a minimum term of 20 years.

He highlighted that although Devi showed remorse for what she has done, she had no right to take the life of her two daughters who were aged 1 and 2 years.

Judge Mataitoga said the sentence should be a deterrent to the members of the public.

Devi took her daughters from Suva to Nausori on January 21st last year where she drowned them.

In mitigation, she told the court that she was beaten by her husband almost every day and she committed the offence out of frustration.
