Woman gets 2 years for manslaughter
Mereoni Koroi on the 18th November, 2008 was involved in a de-facto relationship with the deceased Savenaca Cavalevu.
The 2 were renting a room at the Kings Hotel in Suva.
The court heard the 2 had consumed a substantial amount of alcohol throughout the night and the day before the stabbing.
Justice Daniel Gounder read the facts to Koroi in court that on the night of the stabbing, the deceased had wanted to perform sexual acts to other girls who were within close vicinity.
Justice Gounder told Koroi their relationship was not founded on trust and love but on abuse, humiliation and exploitation.
Gounder told Koroi that she was physically and emotionally abused by the deceased and basically living from her earnings as a sex worker.
While passing sentence Gounder told Koroi that the abuse that she suffered in her relationship with the deceased was not only a grave form of provocation but was an injustice to her because of her vulnerability as a woman.
