The wife of an accused man, who is standing trial for allegedly raping a 17-year-old mute student at a hostel, took the stand in the Suva High Court today.

When questioned by the DPP lawyer, the 40-year-old mute woman who has been married to the accused for 19 years told the court that she did not see her husband when the alleged incidents occurred.

The woman who has been residing at the hostel with her husband for the last 10 years told the court that the girls do not respect her husband and she always counseled them.

She told the court that she read five love letters sent by the alleged victim to her husband.

She also said that she did not like the girls knocking on their door late at night.

The man is charged with eight counts of rape.

The alleged incident occurred between April 1st and 30th, 2011.

The summing up of the case will be held before Justice Janaka Bandara this afternoon.
