If people's rights were being violated even before 5th December, 2006 then what was the Fiji Human Rights Commission doing about it?
This is the question put forward by Transparency International Chairman Hari Pal Singh after comments by Fiji Human Rights Commission chair Shaista Shameem that people's rights were violated before the takeover and there was a form of apartheid in Fiji.
Ousted Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase also today refuted claims by Shameem that Fiji was in an apartheid era before the December 5th takeover adding it was very unfortunate that these comments were made without evidence.
He said the comments were laughable and Shameem should concentrate on doing something useful.
The Fiji Women's Crisis Centre had similar sentiments.
