Whale watching expeditions could soon become another tourism attraction for Fiji and provide a source of income for coastal villages.
The first ever Fiji Humpback Whale Survey training workshop was held in Suva last week and Fisheries Department Saras Sharma said whale watching is still an untapped area in Fiji which needs to be further explored.
Sharma said they are building a sightings network and getting people from all levels to get involved to ensure that the humpback whale watching industry can get off the ground, and at the same time assist in preserving and protecting the largest mammals on earth as they pass through our waters.
The workshop was held in conjunction with WWF and USP.
