Police are investigating alleged misconduct by a Mayor in the Western Division for alleged abuse of office.

Police confirmed that the Mayor is being investigated for allegedly issuing trading permits to a certain supermarket to operate over Christmas and Boxing Day.

It is also alleged that he colluded with the supermarket owner in providing the permit.

Police say the issue surfaced when the supermarket owner was found trading on Christmas Day and also his liquor shop was open for business.

They say when a police patrol team demanded for a permit the shop owner then allegedly approached the Mayor and took him to the Police station where he produced the permit originally dated March 28th, 2003 which had been allegedly altered to 25/12/2007.

However, Police said no application had been lodged as they were not informed of the opening hours for the supermarket.

When contacted this morning the Mayor concerned said will speak to Village news later this morning on the issue.

Namaka Station Officer Inspector Nitya Nand has confirmed a complaint has been lodged against the Mayor and they are investigating.
