The Western Branch of the Fiji Cancer Society continues to function despite the recent revocation of office bearers’ appointments by the government.

Western Branch President Margaret Rounds said they are yet to be informed of how the investigations by the three member committee led by former High Court Judge, Nazhat Shameem will affect them.

According to Rounds, while they are an affiliate of the Fiji Cancer Society, the branch has been operating on funds in their own bank account that has either been raised or donated.

When Fijivillage asked Rounds about the amount of money collected by the Western branch, she could not confirm it as she said she has to conduct further checks.

During this year’s Pinktober, the Western branch has seen fund-raising efforts by Matrix Holdings, Jacks of Fiji’s Hard Rock Café and Fiji Airways.

The total amount is yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile the head of the committee investigating the Fiji Cancer Society, Nazhat Shameem said she cannot comment on the Western branch of the Cancer Society still continuing with its operations.

Shameem only said that they are in the process of investigating the finances and governance procedures of the Fiji Cancer Society.

Former Interim President of the Fiji Cancer Society, Doctor Tukaha Mua had earlier told us that all the money collected by the Society was banked and funds could not be withdrawn as all the Cancer Society accounts were frozen.
