Close to a million dollars worth of gold is now set to leave our shores as part of the first consignment produced by Westech Mining Company limited as the tax dispute with the Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs Authority has been resolved.
In a joint statement, FIRCA and Westech say they have reached a mutually satisfactory arrangement in respect of the dispute over the current and future shipments of gold.
FIRCA CEO Jitoko Tikolevu confirmed to Village news this afternoon that they have cleared the gold shipment at the Lautoka wharf for export.
Westech Mining Director Brian Wesson said this is a positive sign for the economy.
Both parties say that the details of the agreement will not be revealed however it includes certain "without prejudice" payments by Westech.
Meanwhile, Westech said with operations now in full swing, they hope to rake in close to 70 million dollars for the Fiji economy through the gold exports the end of the year.
