A total of 24,751 families are getting financial help from the Ministry of Social Welfare as part of the Family Assistance Scheme.

Under the Scheme, these families get between $60 to $100 to assist in their day-to-day living and to help in their children's educational needs.

With regard to the many that are turned away, Media Officer for the Welfare, Fredrick Elbourne said that during this year alone they received only $18 million which is static and only once they start weaning some of their recipients, will they start looking at assisting more families.

Elbourne also added that they were carrying out a review to go through their list of families currently receiving aid as some of their financial circumstances have changed, as in one case a deceased person's relative was receiving the allowance.
