We must work on our alert system, the giving of information and practicing safety drills in light of a tsunami warning and in the event that an actual tsunami occurs.
These are the words of Fiji Teachers Union General Secretary, Agni Deo Singh who said all this must be clear in the first instance to avoid chaos.
One of a few schools that did not release their students for safety reasons last week after the tsunami warning as they are already on high ground was St Joseph Secondary School.
Principal Sister Genevieve Loo said there needs to be more co-ordination from those in charge.
We have received information that a number of schools which are located on high ground and were safe also sent students home and in some cases in Suva, the students walked to the Suva Bus Stand and were seen walking along the coastal areas in Lami while the tsunami warning was still in place last Thursday.
This clearly showed that some schools closed although they were not under any threat and they actually put the students' lives at risk as they went to the vulnerable areas near the coastal and low lying areas.
