"We have the power to stop a meeting under the Public Emergency Regulation".

Those were the words of Director Operations SSP Waisea Tabakau this morning to clarify on why the police yesterday stopped the National Farmers Union Annual General Meeting which was supposed to be held at Tilak High School in Lautoka.

Tabakau added that despite the permit being granted, the police felt that under the PER it was not safe to carry on with the meeting.

Tabakau stressed that Fiji is under the PER rule and felt that it was not safe for people to gather in big numbers as anything could happen.

National President Sanjit Maharaj said some union members who were unaware of the cancelation and the meeting was only to discuss annual activities and hold elections for office bearers.

He added they are trying to apply for another permit to hold their AGM on 30th May.
