Taxi drivers in Labasa claim that they are struggling to make a living.
President for the Labasa Taxi Operators and long time taxi driver Brijanad Sharma said that there are over 350 taxi operators and with the recent legislation to use taxi metres, people are opting to walk to and from their destinations which is a loss for the drivers.
Sharma said though the drivers are not against the use of metres, at times it would be a miracle if the taxi driver makes $5 profit in a day.
One reason according to Sharma is the cartage costs that are being placed on fuel and tyres from Suva and another being the slow economic progress in the town.
The LTA has warned that taxis found in Labasa without meters will be fined.
