Water levels at Monasavu falling rapidly
Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA) CEO Hasmuk Patel confirmed to Fijivillage that the water level is only 9 meters above critical level and the Weather Office has advised them that below average rain fall in expected in the months ahead despite Fiji now being in the cyclone season.
Patel said to preserve the water levels, FEA has used a lot of diesel in the last 2 to 3 months, especially in August and September which resulted in a huge operational expenditure for FEA which was not budgeted for.
The FEA is now exploring its options to try and preserve water levels at Monasavu and Patel said there are not many cost effective options.
However, he said FEA is not considering power rationing at this stage.
Patel said the FEA is keeping its fingers crossed that fuel prices do not rise to the levels experienced in July and August last year as it would drastically impact their operations.
