The Ministry of Public Enterprise will soon declare the Water Authority of Fiji a Commercial Statutory authority as part of moves to corporatise the water supply department.

And Interim Minister Poseci Bune has stressed that the interim government will ensure that tariffs are not increased for residential consumers as the Authority will strive towards improving water supply to the people.

However, Bune said the Authority will review the tariffs for commercial and high volume users.

He also stresses that critics of the corporatisation of the water supply must understand that the Water Charter Committee, after thorough consultations, had recommended the move.

The Interim government has also agreed that the corporative entity will be funded with a one line grant for a three year period from 2008 to 2010.

A date is now being finalized to commence operations which will see all assets and functions of the Water and Sewerage Department transferred to Water Authority.
