A number of cases of wastage of public funds and poor practices have been highlighted by the Public Accounts Committee on the 2006 accounts of the Department of Land Resources Planning and Development.
The committee has noted with concern the wastage of $3.4 million which was the total expenditure incurred up to the first quarter of 2006 at the Navudi Subdivisions for the resettlement of evicted farmers.
However, the Navudi Subdivisions were not occupied because the farmers considered Navudi as too far from Labasa Town.
There were also no reconciliations of items delivered under the Rural Farming Assistance Scheme, and items were not properly recorded on individual files. The committee says there was a lack of monitoring of the farmers assisted with items purchased with public funds, and most farming groups were not operating.
The committee also noted that 33 sugar cane farmers from the Northern division had sold their farms after utilizing their shares of the grant from the government through the Farming Assistance Scheme programme.
