The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration National Weather service based in Hawaii will now give tsunami warnings only if absolutely necessary.
Dr Gerard Fyer said before they had been giving warnings to Fiji and found out later that these were unnecessary adding this often caused chaos.
Fyer said new technology will be in place within the next few months and this will improve services.
