The Fiji Labour Party said it is shocked at the Interim Government's Decision to defer implementation of the Wages Council Order and to rescind the directive for a 10% reduction in bus fares.
Party Leader and Former Interim Finance Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry said it is clear that Interim Government has succumbed to pressure from the rich and the powerful in society.
However, the Fiji Employers Federation President Dixon Seeto said the decision to defer the wage order will definitely assist employers, many of whom are struggling due to various reasons.
The Interim Prime Minister has directed that the new wages order which was to come into effect on the 1st of February now be deferred to the 1st of July.
Commodore Frank Bainimarama said the timing is not right as the demand for goods and services exported by Fiji has been affected by the global financial crisis. He said our industries are making adjustments to cope with the recession faced in several of our markets and we have had some setbacks with the floods last month.
