The managing director for Mark One Apparel Limited Mark Halabe has questioned the independence of Wages Council chairman Father Kevin Barr saying the decision to increase the wages for people working in the garment industry by 20% from next year is uncalled for.
In an interview with Fijivillage, Halabe stressed the garment industry is currently struggling and a 20% increase in wages will be another burden.
According to Halabe, the devaluation of the Australian dollar will worsen their situation.
However, Wages Council chairman Father Kevin Barr has defended their move to increase wages by 20%, adding that the garment industry owners are only thinking about themselves and not for the poor.
