The World Health Organization has raised the level of Influenza Pandemic Alert from phase 5 to phase 6 this morning.
Health Minister Doctor Neil Sharma said with the announcement, Fiji is now making adjustments to tailor its response measures to the new phase of H1N1 transmission and clinical spectrum.
He said the Ministry will intensify community awareness on preventive measures, continue to maintain stocks of personal protective equipment and antiviral, strengthening capacity of health staff and hospital facilities to manage case of H1N1, maintain border control measures with border control agencies with use of selective screening be health staff at the arrival lounge and have alerts at ports of entry to warn travelers about the virus.
There are no confirmed cases in Fiji.
There are now nearly 30,000 cases of swine flu worldwide and 141 have died from the virus.
