The Lautoka Rugby Union has confirmed that the vote of no confidence which was tabled during last weekend’s Fiji Rugby Union Annual General Meeting was meant for the whole FRU board to be removed.

However this could not happen as the board members who are nominees of the FRU trustees and the Prime Minister cannot be removed by the FRU National Council.

The vote of no confidence was seconded by the Nadroga Rugby Union.

Lautoka Rugby Union Secretary, Salesi Vulakoro said the unions agreed to the vote of no confidence.

However Fiji Rugby Union Chairman Filimoni Waqabaca stated after the meeting the previous board members worked hard to put FRU back on track.

Waqabaca said they have also turned the financial situation around for the FRU from a $600,000 loss to $64,000 profit.

The vote of no confidence was against FRU board members, Mosese Taga, Doctor Esther Williams and Filimoni Vatuvoka.

The three board members have been replaced by John O’Connor, Tiko Matawalu and Marika Luveniyali while Napolioni Batimala Daniel Whippy, trustees nominees Baljeet Singh, Carl Cameron and Dr Berlin Kafoa along with the Prime Minister’s nominee Filimoni Waqabaca were retained.

Meanwhile the FRU AGM was held behind closed doors on Saturday.

When the new board was appointed last year, it had stated that it has nothing to hide and will allow the media to cover the Annual General Meeting.

However the decision was made last week to have a closed door meeting.

When asked on why this step was taken, Waqabaca said that they will now follow the previous practice.

The interim board of the FRU is expected to have the AGM later this month.
