Local athlete Eugene Volmer helped his tertiary institute win the overall US national title and break the national record.

Volmer, who is a student at Fresno Pacific University, took part in the triple jump and soared a school record 15.61 metres to win the triple jump.

The mark also broke the Fiji national record and was the second NAIA title for Volmer, who won the event at the outdoor nationals last year.

Meanwhile, Milika Tuivanuavou overcame illness to place fifth in the shot put.

It is understood that Athletics Fiji is working with its US counterparts to bring in Tuivanuavou and other Fiji athletes abroad to come and assist young athletes at the 2011 Coca Cola Games.
