Germany has thrashed the Vodafone Fiji Under 20 soccer team 8-1 in the FIFA Under 20 World Cup in Christchurch.

Fiji was trailing 6-0 at halftime.

Rewa striker Iosefo Verevou scored Fiji’s lone goal through a header in the third minute of the second half giving him the title of becoming the first player to score for Fiji at a FIFA tournament.

Verevou took advantage of a deep cross after smartly moving away from his marker and headed the ball in the goalmouth.

Fiji only had 25 percent of the ball possession in the match and managed three shots at goal while Germany cruised through in all aspects of the match.

Fiji also committed 14 fouls in the match and Antonio Tuivuna and Jale Dreloa were shown the yellow card.

Germany was also awarded two penalties in the match.

Fiji’s two other group matches will be against Honduras at 4pm this Thursday and Uzbekistan at 2pm Sunday.

We have to win these two matches to qualify for the round of 16.

Meanwhile, Brazil beat Nigeria 4-2 in a dramatic and hugely entertaining game at New Plymouth’s Taranaki Stadium today.
