The people of Viwa Island in Bau, Tailevu are being taught the importance of sustainably developing Fiji's fisheries resources through a workshop organised on the island.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Fisheries Paulini Tokaduadua said a team from the Department of Fisheries visited the island providing information and discussing ways of improving their biodiversity.

Tokaduadua said they decided to undertake the exercise in the Central division following their successful campaign in the North.

She said they would like to assist the communities in enhancing greater awareness and understanding of Fisheries and its components.

However Tokaduadua said in coordinating this they are mindful of requests made from other stakeholders and the need to be flexible in their approach.

The program includes sessions from stakeholder like the Integrated Human Resource Development Programme (IHRDP), the World Wildlife Fund and Ministry of Environment.
