Visa Sanctions Remain Despite Chaudhry Entry
The US Embassy confirms this, although a visa was granted to Interim Finance Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry to enter the US for the annual meeting of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, contrary to the US Government's earlier statements that members of the interim government will not be allowed to travel to the US.
However, the Embassy in Suva confirms that the US has obligations as the host country for international organisations such as the United Nations, the World Bank and the IMF.
As a result, visas are assessed each year in accordance with all applicable laws and procedures including the Immigration and Nationality Act, and the official agreement between each organization and the United States Government.
Chaudhry is in Washington DC, with Finance Permanent Secretary, Peceli Vocea and the Governor of the Reserve Bank, Savenaca Narube, holding bilateral talks with representatives from India and Malaysia as well as attending the annual meeting for the World Bank and IMF meeting.
