Recent studies show that the incidences of violence against women and children have risen to 70 percent in the region.
These are the words of UNIFEM Pacific Regional Program Director, Elizabeth Cox who said this is a problem that needs to be highlighted and looked into and tackled as a human rights problem.
UNIFEM Pacific has been actively mobilizing support from around the Pacific using cards and within the last few weeks has collected more than 3,000 signatures manually and more than 4,000 signatures electronically as part of the No to violence against women campaign led by UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador, Nicole Kidman.
The global campaign which was launched by Kidman on November 26th will culminate in the handing over of nearly 4 million signatures to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon later this week.
Also, the 16 days of Activism against Violence Against Women begins today and ends on December 10th.
