The only source of income for majority of the villagers in Nayau, Lau which is copra, was badly affected by Hurricane Tomas.

Olivia Degevacu said all the dried copra which is sold at $500 a tonne and was all dried and ready for shipment in the vessel, “Cagimaiba”, got wet as the copra shed was blown away by the strong winds.

Degevacu said the villagers in Nayau are slowly fixing the roofs of their houses that were blown away, but the island is in real need of food and water.

Otherwise they are living off what they can get from the sea and whatever root crops that was saved during HUrricane Tomas and the school on the island is expected to begin next week as they are still trying to dry their belongings.

To add to their hardship, Degevacu who is the owner of the village store, does not know when his stock of supplies will reach the island as it is on the “Cagimaiba” which is still in Totoya.
