Villagers benefit from cruiseliners
The Turaga ni Koro for Dravuni village, Anasa Seruvatu said they host the tourists along with those from the neighbouring village of Buliya, and 200 families have benefitted from the chance to earn an income from selling handicrafts and other artefacts.
Seruvatu said the recent Pacific Sun cruiseliner trip last month saw close to 1,400 passengers, spending the entire day at Dravuni village, having a chance to experience village life. He adds some had the chance to prepare a lovo and weave mats, and on average those who did opt to sell items, can earn up to $1000 depending on the types of items being sold.
He adds this has seen an improvement in the standard of living for almost all the families, and with the next visit scheduled on the 28th of this month, the two villagers are already gearing up to host their visitors, with a different program, as the visit will fall on a Sunday.
Meanwhile another cruiseliner is expected in Savusavu on Sunday which will then make its way to Suva on Monday.
