Villagers along Udu Point seek assistance
In Lakeba, Macuata:
Villagers are now pleading for assistance as all their food has been destroyed by Hurricane Tomas.
Villager Kusima Kolivuso said when they started experiencing the strong winds on Saturday morning the village head men moved everyone up to the caves in the hills, but when they returned this morning they were met by devastation as their plantations have been completely damaged.
He added that today is a very sad day for them as the parents know that there is no food to give to their children and they have no option but to sit and wait for help.
Kolivuso said that the 240 villagers are now all crowded in the Village Hall and are waiting for some kind of assistance as majority of the villagers are young and elderly people.
In Udu Point:
Villagers in Nukudamu in Dogotuki along Udu Point are assessing the damage brought upon them by Hurricane Tomas.
Village staff nurse, Litia Koto said that the villagers were first alerted on Friday and they decided to move higher ground and they took off with whatever food they could get hold off.
Koto said that they weathered out the bad weather in the hills and in the village hall, however when they returned this afternoon they discovered widespread damage to the village houses which were old, as well as to their crops.
The 35 five year old said that she returned from where she was sheltering, to a house that had no roof.
When Fijivillage contacted her, Koto said she was trying to save whatever food she could save, but nearly everything had been destroyed with only the tinned food left.
According to Koto, the 2 settlements of Nukudamu which were split into two following Cyclone Ami in 2003, has never been through a Hurricane that has seen many of village homes destroyed and crops damaged.
She added this is a hard time for them as their source of income has been destroyed.
