People of Waidina, Naitasiri, were surprised yesterday morning that the Wainimala river and its tributaries filled with rare species of fly fish.

Village elder Koroi Siganivalu told Fijivillage News that it is the first time they have seen this species of small fly fish in the river and they are requesting the Fisheries Department and fish experts to carry out a study into their presence in the area.

Siganivalu said they are worried that the fly fish can destroy other fish species in the river.

The Fisheries Department is expected to comment later on the matter.
