Former Suva Grammar School sprinter Niko Verekauta is the only Team Fiji athlete left to compete in the Olympics.

Verekauta will today compete in the Men's 400 meters heat. He has the slowest time in his heat of 46.51 seconds. Verekauta's race will start at 1:16pm.

The rest of the Team Fiji athletes, Makelesi Bulikiobo, Sisilia Nasiga, Carl Probert, Joe Vueti and Glen Kable all bombed out of the Games.

In others, Venus and Serena Williams put their women's singles disappointment behind them by winning the Olympic doubles gold. In the Men's singles final Rafael Nadal won the gold while Elena Dementieva won the women's singles final.

Michael Phelps won his eighth Olympic gold medal of the Beijing Games to beat Mark Spitz's 1972 record of seven, with victory in the 4x100 meters medley in a world record time of 3 minutes 29.34 seconds. Phelps swam 17 times over nine days and set world record in 7 finals. It also took Phelps Olympic medal haul to 14 gold and 16 overall.

Just looking at the medal tally, China is still leading at the moment with 35 gold, 13 silver and 13 bronze. USA is in second place with 19 gold, 21 silver and 25 bronze with Great Britain now in third place with 11 gold, 6 silver and 8 bronze.
