Niko Verekauta is keeping his fingers crossed that no other athlete will qualify for the Beijing Olympics so he can be provisionally selected by FASANOC under the "universality provision".

Each Nation is allowed to enter one male and one female athlete into the athletics competition if no-one has achieved an automatic qualifying mark.

Provided no other male athlete from Fiji achieves the qualifying mark, Niko will compete in Beijing.

The last time Niko competed there was in 2006 at the World Junior Championships where he finished fifth in the 400m and he has a best time of 46.22s for the event.

Meanwhile, Makelesi Bulikiobo set a New National record in the 200m event at the Belgian Athletics Championships in Beijing over the weekend with a new time of 23.34 seconds.

Makelesi along with her training partner, Isireli Naikelekelevesi and Niko Verekauta will be training in Europe in the next three weeks.
