The leader of the opposition in Vanuatu has accused Australia and New Zealand of trying to punish Fiji through the cancellation of the Melanesian Spearhead Group Summit.

Speaking to Radio New Zealand, Maxime Korman also called on Vanuatu's Prime Minister Edward Natapei to resign because of his decision to defer the summit, which was to have been hosted and chaired by Fiji.

Korman said he agrees that Fiji's roadmap to democracy is too slow, but said the Pacific way is to continue to discuss rather than cancelling meetings.

He said Natapei's thinking has been influenced by Australia and by the same way was trying to create a division between our Melanesian leaders.

It was earlier confirmed that Australian Government officials had lobbied for the MSG to be postponed as it would have been chaired by Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.
