I strongly believe the spending of public finances need to be scrutinized and that is why I agreed to join the Public Accounts Committee, there is no other reason.
Those are the words of Former Education Minister under the SVT Government Taufa Vakatale follows criticisms by the National Federation Party and the Pacific Centre for Public Integrity that the appointment of the committee is a mockery of the constitution.
Vakatale said at the end of the day it is the public that will benefit and the critics should always remember this fact.
Vakatale has been accused of being a sympathizer and an apologist of the Interim Government.
NFP General Secretary Pramod Rae has labeled the appointment of certain persons in the new Public Accounts Committee as an act of nepotism and cronyism.
He also said under the constitution and Parliamentary Standing Orders, the Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee is an appointee of the Leader of Opposition and under parliamentary democracy, majority of the members of the committee are opposition parliamentarians.
