The UN Secretary General in New York today launched the "Commission on AIDS in the Pacific" Report which calls for Pacific countries to upscale their AIDS response and calls for stricter laws.
Speaking at a discussion on the report held at Holiday Inn in Suva this morning, UNAIDS Project Officer, Rachel James say the report, highlights the need to look at the issue on a national level.
Meanwhile, in launching the Report, UN General Secretary Ban Ki Moon has called on countries in the Pacific to ensure that their Laws empower women, as gender inequalities and gender based violence are major drivers of the spread of HIV & AIDS in the Pacific.
According to Ban Ki Moon, outside of PNG, Fiji along with New Caledonia, French Polynesia and Guam account for the vast majority of the reported cases in Pacific.
Ban Ki Moon adds that pacific countries can prevent the increase in infections and deaths and avoid economic losses by implementing the report.
In 2008, there were an estimated 59,000 people living with HIV & AIDS in the region with Health Ministry data showing that 303 people in the country are living with the disease.
