While there has been an overall drop of 12 percent in offences against public morality, the Fiji Women's Crisis Centre (FWCC) believes there is also a drop in the reporting of such cases.

According to Police statistics for the first five months of 2009, the number of rape and attempted rape cases has dropped by 43 percent, indecent assault by 18%, defilement of girls under 13 by 64% compared to the same period last year, while there has been a marked increase of 67% in the defilement of girls between 13 and 16, an increase of 50% in unnatural offences, an increase of 19% of other offences against public morality and no change in the incest cases.

Fiji Women's Crisis Centre Coordinator Shameema Ali said these figures however are not indicative of the real picture as many people do not report sexual offences against them.
