As we continue our special report on “Two Years On Since the Military Takeover”, the Confederation of Public Sector Unions is calling on the interim government to call an elections as soon as possible.
Spokesperson for the Confederation and Fiji Teachers Union General Secretary Agni Deo Singh said the civil servants have suffered a lot since the takeover as only months after the interim government came into power, the decision was made to cut civil servants' pay by 5 percent and scrap the Cost of Living Adjustment or COLA.
Fiji Trades Union Congress General Secretary Felix Anthony said there has been some progress over the last year after the promulgation of the Employment Relations Bill.
But Anthony is concerned about the scrapping of COLA for civil servants.
Meanwhile, in the past two years, the Fiji Retailers Association said the retail trade has been affected with reduced consumer spending.
However, Association President Himmat Lodhia said it is not that gloomy.
Lodhia said there have been some pluses and minuses in relation to the cost of doing business in Fiji.
Tourism which has become the main driver of the economy is on a recovery mode after all the travel advisories about Fiji in 2006 and 2007.
Fiji Visitors Bureau Chairman Patrick Wong said they are expected to get about 600,000 visitors this year and things are looking good.
