Union wants miners to be reinstated
General Secretary Satish Chandra said miners and their families are really feeling the effect as the mine still remains closed.
Mining Company Westech Limited is still negotiating with the interim government to have the garnishee order on their property lifted by Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs Authority.
Director Brian Wesson said their legal representatives met with the Interim Prime Minister yesterday and they have agreed to pay $750,000 this week.
However, he added that they want the issue to be resolved as they would not want FIRCA to place the garnishee order again and ask them to pay the left over $10 million which was owed by Emperor Gold Mines.
Meanwhile, FIRCA acting chief executive, Pramod Achary said FIRCA is doing its job to recover millions of dollars worth of taxes from mining company Westech which were owed by Emperor Gold Mines for almost twenty years ago.
He added the company has already reneged from its earlier agreement with government which if implemented would have resolved all relevant taxation issues.
Achary said FIRCA cannot consistently with its statutory duties simply free up Westech's accounts as Westech must act reasonably before such process can take place.
