The United States has made it clear to Interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama during his visit to New York, that it expects a better commitment from Fiji to return to democracy as early as 2009.
As part of the New US focus in the region, it has been confirmed by US State Department official, Glyn Davies that Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Christopher Hill will be taking part in the post forum dialogue at the Pacific Islands leaders Forum in Tonga.
Speaking to ABC Pacific Beat, Davies said that the interim regime in Fiji should honour its commitment and return the country to democratic rule.
High on the agenda at the forum will be moves to restore democracy in Fiji following the military takeover on December 5th last year.
Meanwhile, Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama had earlier said that he will definitely attend the Tonga summit, despite statements by his Australian and New Zealand Counterpart's that he would not be welcome.
The Pacific Islands Leaders Forum will get underway on October 14th.
