US Relies On Own Soures-Dinger
Larry Dinger hopes that the Chairperson of Fiji Human Rights Commission Shaista Shameem and others will consider the Human Rights report as constructive, intended to encourage better adherence to universal values and fundamental rights.
While commenting on Dr Shameem's statement yesterday that the United States itself has flaws, Dinger said they are not infallible however their democratic system is accountable and their military always remains subordinate to the elected civilian leadership.
Dinger said America does not regard as interference in their internal affairs when others criticize US human rights practices. He said they value the vital roles civil society and independent media play in holding leaders to their commitments.
He said while compiling the Human Rights Report, the US never submits drafts for editing by host nation authorities to maintain an independent perspective. Dinger said this is done with the aim to produce as accurate a depiction of human rights practices as is possible including flaws.
Meanwhile, Dr Shameem earlier commented that no one wants the US to be the guardian of human rights for the rest of the world. She also challenged the US government to tell the people of Fiji how it intends to deal with gross human rights violations committed by the US in Iraq, while it destroys that country.
