UN recognizes youths
Network President, Peter Waqavonovono said that this is a bold and timely recognition for youths especially since 40 percent of the populations in Fiji are youths ranging from the age of 16 to 30 years of age.
Waqavonovono adds that unemployment and the abuse of alcohol and drugs has seen many youths engage in unlawful acts with their young days spent in jail.
However giving them recognition and responsibility will see a huge boost in the fight to reduce crime in the country.
He adds the focus for the Network this year is the push for the establishment of a National Youth Council.
According to the UN, the theme was adopted so that young energy could be harnessed and better understanding be given to understand the needs and concerns as well as contributions youths make to society.
As part of the United Nations celebrations, various activities such as the International Youth Parliament and the Youth Olympic Games have been organised.
The theme for this year is "Dialogue and Mutual Understanding".
