The United Nations Day was celebrated in Suva with the raising of the UN flag which signifies the official opening of the UN premises.

In his speech, Dr Isiye Ndomi who is the acting UN Resident Coordinator sa the United Nations has a foundation of human rights on which stand the pillars of its commitment to development, peace and security and social justice.

He said people look to the United Nations to stand up for human rights, to defeat poverty and hunger, to expand education and to protect them from illness.

He added the world is faced by challenges such as Global Economic Crisis, climate change, terrorism, conflicts and growing number of disasters. The Fiji Govt was acknowledged by the UN for the support of the UN system based in Suva.
