UN contribution looked at on case by case basis
These are the words of UN Public Information Officer, Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Anayansi Lopez regarding 280 Fiji UN peacekeepers in 5 countries across the world today.
Lopez said there is no way to predict for how long a Mission will continue adding dates and contributions varies daily.
He adds there are currently 221 Fiji troops in the UN Mission for Iraq, 13 Police officers in the UN Mission in Darfur, 31 Police officers in the UN Mission for Liberia, 8 Police officers and 6 UN Military Observers for the UN Mission in Sudan and 1 UN Military Observer for the UN Mission in Timor-Leste.
Meanwhile, PACNEWS reports Defence Minister, Ratu Epeli Ganilau said he is not aware of fresh attempts by Australia to have Fiji moved out of international peacekeeping operations with the UN.
PACNEWS said The Australian newspaper said Canberra has asked the UN to order a "progressive replacement of Fijian troops" in peacekeeping operations.
The move follows similar efforts by the Australian and New Zealand governments in recent months.
