The government of Tuvalu is awaiting word from the Fiji government to start trade between Tuvalu and Rotuma.

Tuvalu's Deputy High Commissioner to Fiji Uale Taleni said they are ready to open their arms to Fiji through trade with Rotuma and are waiting final details before the two island nations can begin closer working relations.

Taleni said Tuvalu is an atoll, there is insufficient land to cultivate and this gives Fiji farmers another market to tap into.

He said they want to start importing the three root crops that are in abundance in Fiji, which are dalo, cassava and sweet potatoes.

Further talks between the two governments are expected in the month ahead.
